Could You update Scala to version 2.9.1? There have been numerous changes since Scala 2.8, which is currently used on SPOJ.

+1 from me on this. Scala 2.8 seems very much out of date now.

It should also allow the programs to run much faster than they currently do.

Any idea on when this might happen?

Still nothing? This should be very easy. By the way, the newest stable version is now 2.9.2.
